Pinacoteca Camerino
Pinacoteca Camerino

Camerino’s art gallery and civic museums were established in 1903 and are housed by the former San Domenico convent complex, refurbished specifically to accommodate the municipal collections. Like most Marches museums the institute was founded to preserve artworks acquired by the municipality following the suppression of ecclesiastical orders and consequently numerous testimonies of Camerino’s glorious past have survived. From the 1300s to the 1500s, Camerino was a dominion of the Varano family and enjoyed remarkable economic success as well as development of its artistic production. The bond with the local area and its history acts as a guiding thread through the museum, beginning with the prolific archaeological collection arranged on the first floor of the convent buildings. The upper floor, on the other hand, is occupied by a collection of paintings and sculptures almost all brought from the churches located on the ancient Duchy of Varano estate. The corpus can be traced back to work by the main artists of the Camerino school (Giovanni Angelo di Antonio da Bolognola, Girolamo di Giovanni and Giovanni Boccati of Camerino). Of great historical and collector interest is the series of Varano family portraits, left as legacy by the Ferrara branch of the family. A contemporary art section and a display of antique decorated pharmacy pottery completes the collection. The installation has applied criteria of unfussy but thorough communication, implemented through educational panels produced after detailed study and research was conducted during the important 2002 exhibition dedicated to Camerino painting in the Renaissance period.
